Impact For Development is pleased to announce the publication of “Flattening the Curve with Civic Technologies: A Case of Open Innovation during COVID-19”, written by Marta Poblet, Pompeu Casanovas, Tarik Nesh-Nash, Fatima-Ezzahra Denial, and Víctor Rodríguez Doncel. This publication is a contribution to the workshop on “Civic Technologies: Research, Practice, and Open Challenges”, under the 23rd ACM Conference on Computer-Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing, held from October 17th to October 21st, 2020.
The publication analyzes the role of civic technologies in the pandemic emergency and presents the case study of Mobadarat.ma, as an innovation platform launched by Impact For Development and created in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, to crowdsource ideas and solutions to contribute to the national response to the pandemic. In addition to Mobadarat.ma, the publication also discusses the “Role of Local Context and Infrastructure in Designing, Implementing, Adopting, and Maintaining Civic Technology”; “The Key Elements of the Configuration of Trust Among Government, Citizenry, and Local Organizations”; as well as, “The Methods and Strategies for Conducting Research on Civic Technologies”.
The case of Mobadarat.ma showcases the role of local context and infrastructure in designing, implementing, adopting and maintaining civic technology. In fact, Mobadarat.ma emerged when Morocco was under a nation-wide lockdown due to the pandemic; it aimed to leverage the community’s collective intelligence through a crowdsourcing method, combined with a bottom up and top down approach. The fruit of this strategy was a platform that not only enables cross learning and knowledge exchange between participants and decision makers; but that also opens the door for international collaboration and learning in open innovation, in fact, Mobadarat has been adopted by the United Arab Emirates University and applied in accordance to the UAE context.
In the context of increasing international sharing of best practices and breaking the international knowledge silos, Impact For Development, in partnership with GovRight Tech, launched OpenDev Library, a benchmarking online platform that offers a database of international case studies related to Public Innovation, Open Government and Smart Cities.
